For this activity, students created a timeline using TimeToast based on a reading about Christopher Columbus’ journey to the New World. The main learning objectives were to improve reading comprehension, develop the ability to identify key historical events, and practise organizing information chronologically in English. Another important objective was to integrate digital tools into the learning process and encourage students to work with authentic content.
Using TimeToast offered several advantages. First, it allowed students to visually organize historical events, which helped them better understand the sequence of Columbus’s journey. Second, it promoted active engagement with the text because students had to select the most relevant information instead of simply answering comprehension questions. Finally, it also supported the development of digital competence, which is especially valuable for adult learners.
To set up the activity, I first introduced the reading text and reviewed key vocabulary related to exploration and history. Students then read the text individually and identified important dates and events. After that, I demonstrated how to create a timeline in TimeToast and showed them how to add dates, titles and short descriptions. Finally, students created their own timelines and shared their results.
One of the main difficulties was that some students were not familiar with the platform. To solve this, I guided them step by step and allowed them to help each other during the process.
Students reacted positively to the activity. Many of them found the tool intuitive and appreciated the visual format, which made the historical information easier to understand.
Next time, I would allow more time for exploration of the tool and encourage students to add images to enrich their timelines. Overall, TimeToast helped achieve the learning objectives by promoting chronological thinking, active reading, and meaningful use of English.
